"Histoire culturelle de la Wallonie" présente au lecteur une vision complète à la fois historique et thématique de la culture en Wallonie. Elle explore notamment la question brûlante de l'identité culturelle de la Wallonie au fil des siècles, à travers les nombreuses expressions artistiques, musicales, littéraires et autres d'un sentiment wallon. L'ouvrage, richement illustré, scrute dans un premier temps l'histoire de la culture depuis les origines. Les grandes périodes, de la préhistoire au monde actuel, sont amplement analysées par des spécialistes de renom. Dans un deuxième temps, le lecteur est plongé dans une présentation thématique de la culture en Wallonie. Par le biais d'essais passionnants, traitant des langues et de la littérature, du livre et de l'édition, de la musique, des arts de la scène, des arts plastiques, de la photographie et de multiples autres aspects, la diversité du patrimoine culturel de ce « pays » wallon est mise en avant. Ce parcours se conclut par une synthèse des relations de la Wallonie avec ses proches (Flamands, Bruxellois, Français et Allemands).

Because of their spectacular, naturalistic pictures of plants and the human body, Leonhart Fuchs's De historia stirpium and Andreas Vesalius's De humani corporis fabrica are landmark publications in the history of the printed book. But as Picturing the Book of Nature makes clear, they do more than bear witness to the development of book publishing during the Renaissance and to the prominence attained by the fields of medical botany and anatomy in European medicine. Sachiko Kusukawa examines these texts, as well as Conrad Gessner's unpublished Historia plantarum, and demonstrates how their illustrations were integral to the emergence of a new type of argument during this period-a visual argument for the scientific study of nature. To set the stage, Kusukawa begins with a survey of the technical, financial, artistic, and political conditions that governed the production of printed books during the Renaissance. It was during the first half of the sixteenth century that learned authors began using images in their research and writing, but because the technology was so new, there was a great deal of variety of thought-and often disagreement-about exactly what images could do: how they should be used, what degree of authority should be attributed to them, which graphic elements were bearers of that authority, and what sorts of truths images could and did encode. Kusukawa investigates the works of Fuchs, Gessner, and Vesalius in light of these debates, scrutinizing the scientists' treatment of illustrations and tracing their motivation for including them in their works. What results is a fascinating and original study of the visual dimension of scientific knowledge in the sixteenth century.

In this book, Carl Goldstein examines the print culture of seventeenth-century France through a study of the career of Abraham Bosse, a well-known printmaker, book illustrator, and author of books and pamphlets on a variety of technical subjects. The consummate print professional, Bosse persistently explored the endless possibilities of print - single-sheet prints combining text and image, book illustration, broadsides, placards, almanacs, theses, and pamphlets. Bosse had a profound understanding of print technology as a fundamental agent of change. Unlike previous studies, which have largely focused on the printed word, this book demonstrates the extent to which the contributions of an individual printmaker and the visual image are fundamental to understanding the nature and development of early modern print culture.
